BARCELONA SET SIGHTS ON DEFENDER SIGNING THIS SUMMER

It is no news that Spanish La Liga giants Barcelona need to sign a proper defender this summer to bolster their ranks. The Catalan giants are now well-packed in attack following their January winter transfer window business, while also having a solid midfield to compliment it. However, they have been too vulnerable in defense and they have been tipped to sign proven defenders to strengthen their back line, something they look to have turned to.

The Camp Nou outfit are set for a major defensive overhaul in the upcoming transfer window, with left-back one of the main areas of focus for the club. As things stand, the Blaugrana have Jordi Alba as their first-choice left-back with no other senior player to cover for him. Alejandro Balde has not been called upon much by manager Xavi Hernandez and there is a possibility that he could be loaned out next season.

With Alba not getting any younger and his performances being up and down, a new signing in the position is needed in the summer. And, for the longest time, the Catalans have been pushing to sign Valencia defender Jose Gaya to replace the veteran star. The 26-year-old has been a priority target for Barcelona, and have been lining up a move for quite a while. And they could potentially act on their interest in the summer owing to the Spaniard’s contract situation at the Mestalla.

Gaya’s contract with Los Che stands to expire in 2023. While reports have indicated that he is in talks to sign a new deal, a fresh update from Mundo Deportivo claims that he wants to take the next step in his career, which Barça are ready to offer him. With the Valencia skipper set to enter the final year of his deal, the La Liga club must sell him in the summer or risk losing him for nothing if he does not wish to sign an extension.
